How Often Should Engine And Outdrive Oil Be Changed For A Mercuruser 3.0

  • #1

Being new boat owners (of an older boat)... how often practice you change the oil? It'southward a I/O 5.0L Merc with 172 hours on information technology (if any of that makes a departure)... the dealer changed the oil when we purchased it and we've taken information technology out twice putting 11 hours on it. Someone said to me "y'all should change the oil soon"... what? Are you kidding? How often practise yous have to do that? And what oil is recommended?

Thanks,
Des

100 hours or once a twelvemonth... whichever comes first. Aforementioned with the drive fluid.

Re: How frequently exercise you lot modify the oil?

I get no more than 50 hours, and at the finish of the flavour.
But and then once more I use the gunkhole a little harder than most on here.

Re: How often practice you change the oil?

Honestly you volition demand to ship a sample into blackstone labs to be sampled before you can know for certain. Suck some thru the dipstick and send it for a sample mid style thru the season.

I say this becuase you demand to address these following areas:

-Fuel dillution
-Water/Coolant contagion
-Belongings its viscosity SAE30 will stay a 30wt if used correctly. If not it may fall to a 20wt.

Technically it should last all season and still come up out semi transparent. If it gets thin or jet black, then it is overfuling. Boats will tend to use oil moreso than a car beingness under more load all the fourth dimension. Brand certain to summit off if demand be.

Re: How often practise you change the oil?

Being new boat owners this forum is pricesless! Ok - so we're good on the oil. We also check information technology earlier nosotros get out everytime (only existence twice) and it still looks new.

Nosotros did detect the ability steering fluid was depression, nosotros were just going to add more to the reservoir? Tin I use fluid from an auto store or do I demand to buy marine? I see quick argent power trim & steering fluid online...?

The gear lube we are going to drain completely and refill... (thank you lot philster) Does anyone have an opinion on Quicksilver Loftier Operation Gear Lube?

Any other fluids nosotros should be checking or replacing?

Re: How often do you change the oil?

When you say "don't mix the gear lubes" since nosotros don't know what make is already in there, merely draining the oil lube out (including the reservoir) and refilling with new lube is what you lot mean, right? At that place would still exist residuum from the erstwhile oil...?

P.S. bought the boat used, don't Have a transmission, thought forum would assistance. Don't claim to be "smarter" than manual, equally a matter of fact I call up I've made information technology clear in all my posts I'm a new gunkhole owner who doesn't have a clue... therefore I bring EVERYTHING to the forum for help =)

As a thing of fact, would never have even thought to alter the gear lube before Phils friendly post! Thank you again anybody who's offered advice - I'LL Take ALL I CAN GET!

Re: How often exercise y'all change the oil?

When you lot say "don't mix the gear lubes" since we don't know what brand is already in there, simply draining the oil lube out (including the reservoir) and refilling with new lube is what you lot hateful, correct? There would nonetheless be residue from the old oil...?
Desera

You'll still have a little fluid left in the drive, but its not enough to be concerned with. Just change it with some high quality lube (I employ the Merc brand) and y'all'll be fine.

P.S. bought the boat used, don't HAVE a manual, thought forum would help. Don't claim to be "smarter" than manual, equally a matter of fact I think I've made it articulate in all my posts I'm a new boat owner who doesn't take a clue... therefore I bring EVERYTHING to the forum for aid =)

99% of the people on this forum was in the same 'gunkhole' equally yourself at some point. Thats why we join forums to proceeds knowledge and pass out useful tips nosotros've learned. Don't let everyone discourage you from posting questions.

Re: How ofttimes exercise you change the oil?

i) reminding all that we try to keep this department gratis of engine topics

QC- would it not be easier to move the thread to the proper forum and then mail a friendly reminder of why y'all did it? Go along in mind, nosotros where all newbies at some signal. ;)

Re: How oft do yous change the oil?

"she" does take the manual now, I capeesh you sending it over QC. I admit, I'm so far out of my element I didn't even realize this was an engine topic.

Philster, I searched changing the lower gear lube on the internet and institute a helpful video, looks like we can handle it. If non for this forum it's likely I would have establish out too late to change the gear oil. Nosotros went down to the marine store and picked up 3 quarts of Quicksilver Loftier Performance Lube like the transmission QC sent over to me stated. It did non say synthetic, I purchased just what it said, so I promise I went the correct direction on that.

Thanks all!
